It wouldn’t be a Liverpool transfer window if signings we thought might be likely to happen crumbled into ash before our very eyes.
In quick succession, the Reds were ruled out of moves for Donyell Malen and Saul Niguez by a handful of reports.
That having been said, it could also mean nothing.
As recent tweets from Rik Elfrink (PSV insider) and Matteo Moretto (Sky Sports journalist) have illustrated, things are from being done and dusted when it comes to the futures of our reported targets.
Money, as ever, remains the crux of the issue - at least as far as our own transfer plans are concerned.
Are there any funds left in the transfer kitty as it stands? Or have we blown it all on (admittedly a top-tier talent) Ibrahima Konate?
You’d think with a player of Saul’s calibre on the line, we might demonstrate some level of flexibility - particularly given we’ve yet to find a suitable replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.
If last summer’s transfer window taught us anything it’s that we CANNOT afford to go into the next campaign assuming that our current options will be enough to allow us to safely navigate the demands of both domestic and European football.
All three of Liverpool’s first-choice central midfielders beyond Wijnaldum were stuck recovering on the sidelines for at least some amount of time in the 2020/21 season.
That’s not even considering just how unreliable our back-up options were!
At any rate, we could see this window potentially mirroring last year’s; starting off with a defensive signing (albeit a somewhat more exciting one than that of Kostas Tsimikas) before dropping jaws with a world-class midfielder and raising eyebrows with an underrated forward.
The departures of Rhian Brewster and Dejan Lovren undoubtedly contributed to our ability to fund such moves, and we’d expect a handful of player sales to facilitate further business beyond Konate this summer.
With that in mind, there’s plenty to be positive about if the club follows a similar trajectory this time around.
We only hope that the recruitment team have a couple of aces in the hole just in case the likes of Malen and Saul are beyond our reach.

Rafa Benitez called out for old anti-Everton comment in first Blues presser
The Spaniard’s first press conference as Everton boss was bound to invite some interesting questions from the media, not least of all regarding his Liverpool past. Benitez addressed one comment he’d made about his current club, which the side’s fans - nor journalists - have apparently forgotten about.
Griezmann could help Liverpool secure the transfer of Saul Niguez this summer!
We never thought we’d say this… but Antoine Griezmann may be our only hope of securing Saul Niguez’s signature this summer. The French World Cup-winner has offered Liverpool something of a semi-lifeline when it comes to the potential Georginio Wijnaldum replacement.
Liverpool Twitter has gone MAD over one update on an Anfield-linked 19-goal attacker
In one fell swoop, a handful of reports have led Liverpool fans to become absolutely incensed on social media. The club has been accused of acting too slowly when it comes to the Eredivisie star linked, with it seeming increasingly likely that the striker will be heading elsewhere.
And last but not least…
EOTK Insider Opinion: Liverpool will be tempted to loan out Harvey Elliott… but here’s why they shouldn’t
There’s a tendency to call for young players to be given loan experience to develop their maturity and better prepare them for life in their parent club’s first-team. As is often the case, however, a lot of starlets end up stuck in the never-ending loan washing machine cycle, their potential unfulfilled. Looking at Trent Alexander-Arnold and Raheem Sterling, there are clear examples proving it’s possible for Elliott to break into the first-XI.
