Good afternoon, Reds!
We welcome you to another round of transfer intrigue and all the latest, most interesting tidbits to pop up on our screens of late.
On the transfer merry-go-round, it’s been a slightly depressing week, as reliable journalist Neil Jones of Goal reported the recruitment team’s ongoing struggles to pinpoint a viable target beyond Ibrahima Konate.
Now… before you start peppering the messenger with virtual projectiles, it’s worth stressing that there is still time left in the window.
As last summer’s business certainly demonstrated, Liverpool have the capacity to surprise all - even those close to the club who had repeatedly insisted that Thiago Alcantara was nothing more than a pipe dream.
While we wouldn’t suggest that another signing of the Spanish international’s calibre is likely, we’re not inclined to throw the towel in just yet as far as potential transfers are concerned.
However, a case could be made for us putting all our eggs in one basket and avoiding bolstering the forward line this summer.
The fact of the matter is that if our prestigious, first-choice front-three is firing on all cylinders, there isn’t a better attacking trio in world football.
Diogo Jota has certainly proved more than capable in that department and Harvey Elliott looks ready for some minutes in the top-flight.
By comparison, with all three of our starting midfielders suffering from injuries at some stage of the prior season - not to forget how injury prone Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have been - securing a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum is an absolute MUST.
The Dutch international (as many of you will probably be tired of hearing from us) was Jurgen Klopp’s only reliable midfield option last year, missing a grand total of 0 league games in the 2020/21 campaign.
If we only get the opportunity to properly fund one new signing - midfield is one area of the pitch we HAVE to invest in.
Interestingly, Klopp’s experiments in pre-season may have provided some hints already regarding his plans for the next stage of the club’s evolution.
And if that wasn’t enough for you - Xherdan Shaqiri’s potential exit from the club could point to us addressing our midfield conundrum sooner than some may expect…

How Klopp’s handled the No.9 position in Firmino’s absence suggests two Liverpool stars could be headed for the exit door
Liverpool need to sell to buy this summer, due to the combined reality of the club’s sustainable transfer policy and the financial ramifications of COVID-19. How Jurgen’s handled the vacant No.9 spot, however - handing an opportunity to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in pre-season - suggests a lack of faith in alternative options in the squad…
Shaqiri may have handed Liverpool a HUGE double boost to their hopes of acquiring Saul Niguez…
Xherdan Shaqiri made public his desire to seek a new challenge away from Liverpool, a request the club seem more than happy to fulfill, particularly as it should further pad the transfer kitty. There seems to be some dispute over his reported price-tag, however, which raises a number of interesting questions regarding our potential future business in the window.
EOTK Insider Opinion: Carragher’s made an interesting point RE: Wijnaldum though we’re not quite sure about his online abuse comment
Fans were divided over former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher’s response to Wijnaldum’s comments regarding his Anfield exit. Some have accused the Dutch international of making excuses to justify the nature of his departure, whilst others have highlighted the need for social media companies to take action against faceless abusers. What do you think, Reds?
And last but not least…
Elliott’s role during pre-season may have given away a big hint about how Klopp plans to change his side for the next season
Harvey Elliott is a name we’re very much excited about here at EOTK Insider. Posting big numbers last term, after many doubted him in the Championship, has only served to further endear him to us and we’re hoping he can enjoy a BIG breakthrough season at Liverpool this year. It seems like Jurgen Klopp has already got a rough idea of how to use him…
