π΄ Liverpool Player Ratings v Real Madrid: Fullbacks shine as Reds dominate xG but fail to score big chances π΄
0-0 against the Spaniards sees Klopp's Reds out of the Champions League π«
Liverpool drew 0-0 with Real Madrid tonight, confirming our exit from the Champions League. We had 15 efforts, three or four of which could definitely be described as gilt-edged chances.
The performance was very nice - easily good enough to win - maybe not by the two goals required but certainly by one.
As it was, the result was a good summary of the season. Dominance in periods, ruined by poor finishing and a side badly missing the support of the fans.
Alisson - 7
Largely untested but bravely thwarted Vinicius in the second-half. Also volleyed a long-ball clear first-time when 50 yards out of his goal. Good to see heβs still backing himself despite some recent errors.
Trent - 8
One brilliant run in the first should have led to Gini Wijnaldum scoring from his pull-back. Also dealt with Vinicius and then Rodrygo far, far better than last week. Probably Liverpoolβs best player.
Robbo - 7
Robbo loves a European night, and was right up for this one. He got booked for kicking off at Casemiro in the first, but his multiple raids down the left sadly came to nothing.
Kabak - 6
Pretty good, again. Subbed off, but passed well and carried the ball decently out of defence. This performance will go in the βMaybe we should pay the buyout clauseβ box.
Phillips - 7
Heβll get his head on absolutely everything. He really will. He was ok on it, as well. The fact heβs gone from Bundesliga II to not looking out of place in a Champions League quaterfinal is mighty impressive, ya know. Will get us Β£10m in the summer, at least.
Fabinho - 6
Did his job. Dealt better with Modric and Kroos than last week, but couldnβt pick any really telling passes from deep in midfield. Solid, but Hendo alongside him would have been incredible.
Milner - 7
Loved Milnerβs performance tonight. He was subbed early, but only because heβd run himself into the ground. Was visibly leading the side from the left-side of the midfield three. Without Hendo, he warrants his spot.
Gini - 7.5
Really good, actually. Skinned Kroos more than once and had tonnes of the ball, which he dribbled with and drove into pockets of space. Heβd have got an 8 if he hadnβt have weakly scuffed that first-half shot over the bar.
Mane - 6
Nice touches, nice dribbling, but just couldnβt find the moment we needed. His pass across to Salah for the early chance was a thing of beauty, though. Still, this is a game where you need your superstars to pull something out of the bag.
Salah - 6
Very good up until his shooting. Massive opportunity in the first, then two more decent ones in the second. On his day, he mightβve got a hat-trick. Nice direct running and worked his socks off, but he judges himself on his goals, so we will too this evening.
Bobby - 6
Two shots in the second, but couldnβt beat Courtois. Dropped deep to find the ball as the game went on, but didnβt do anything special with it.
Subs:
Thiago - 6
Nice touches. Made a chance for Mo at the end, but we probably got worse with Milner not on the field.
Jota - 5
Peripheral. Couldnβt get into the game on the left-hand side.
Shaqiri - n/a
Found no space as Real Madrid parked the bus.
Oxlade-Chamberlain - n/a
Brought on to shoot from 25 yards, but didnβt/
