🔴EOTK Insider Opinion: Liverpool won't go for Dembele for one BIG reason Klopp and co. have hammered home 🚫
Jurgen Klopp runs a tight ship at Liverpool and it's paid off... Dembele would represent a signing fit to rock the boat
Over the years, Liverpool have made a magic trick something of a habit in their transfer dealings since Jurgen Klopp took over, taking rough, underappreciated diamonds and transforming them into the finely cute jewels they are today.
Andy Robertson from Hull and Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle United remain prominent examples of why world-class talent shouldn't be exclusively sourced from other top clubs.
For obvious reasons, the club can't afford to fork out in excess of £40m every time an improvement to the squad is desired (though exceptions have been made when necessary).
The question, of course, when it comes to a player like Ousmane Dembele is whether the perenially injured Frenchman will be an exception to the rule.
Financially, the attacker would fit neatly within our idea of a suitable transfer in light of his expiring contract, then there's also the age profile to consider - at 24-years-old, he ticks that box too.
However, as something of a renowned troublemaker, the former Borussia Dortmund star will likely be considered a walking red flag as far as our recruitment masterminds are concerned.
Where to begin with the No.7’s chequered history…
Trashing Klopp’s house is probably as good a place to start as any.
Back in 2017, the 54-year-old had reportedly made a number of attempts to reach the forward by phone to discuss the poor state he’d left the accommodation in.
There's a sense that all was forgiven following Klopp's comments in a press conference three years ago when reports surfaced around the French international's supposed transfer availability.
"Oooh, he’s on the market? Now I’m interested," the former Mainz boss told reporters. "Ok, I never comment on transfer rumours… I’ve already said much than I usually say."
Nonetheless, since that point, Dembele's behaviour has hardly been spotless and, if Klopp's treatment of beloved class clown Mamadou Sakho was anything to go by, there's no chance of the German tolerating the Blaugrana man's antics in Merseyside.
From playing video games until the early hours to discriminatory comments made during a club tour, the Frenchman has hardly put his best foot forward over the years with his behaviour.
Given how Liverpool pride themselves as a club that prioritise character over ability, it’s difficult to see the Barcelona attacker fitting neatly within those conditions without a personality transplant.
And that’s all without considering the winger’s imperfect injury record.
According to Transfermarkt, since his switch to the Spanish top-flight in the summer of 2017, injuries have kept Dembele on the sidelines for an alarming total of 677 days (yes, you read that right!).
A potential move for the Frenchman, even on a Bosman free transfer, rather seems too much trouble for what it’s worth.
Regardless, no matter the player’s shimmering potential, injuries or no, Ousmane Dembele’s character flaws single him out as a rough diamond to admire from a distance rather than one to mould in person.
