Today’s top stories:
Moises Caicedo is going to Chelsea - that has pretty much been confirmed, if not yet by either of the clubs involved. In one way, the whole saga is really complicated and in another, it’s quite straightforward. Chelsea have obviously been leading this race for a very long time. They’ve been putting in what you can imagine is an awful lot of groundwork with the agent, the player and Brighton.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have got into a situation that has escalated as the summer has gone on, where they desperately need a player of that type and calibre. Liverpool ultimately lost players they didn’t expect to lose in Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. I think they sniffed an opportunity with Caicedo whilst Chelsea were still yet to agree a deal. I think they were probably given some encouragement by Brighton, or perhaps by someone else, that Chelsea were struggling to agree a deal and that there was an opening for Liverpool to come in and pose a question.
