'If 2024 is over for me...' - Klopp appears to leave the door open for another Liverpool extension 🧐
It's a long way away but no Liverpool fan would be against seeing the German extend his current terms.
Jurgen Klopp has given Liverpool fans a glimmer of hope, appearing not to rule out the possibility of extending his stay at Anfield beyond the 2024 expiry of his current terms.
The German did not discuss the end of his contract with a sense of finality, though did add that he would be interested in a year's sabbatical “if” his tenure in Merseyside were to end on course in three years' time.
“There's no point in adding something, because it's still so long,” the former Dortmund boss told Bild (via the Echo).
“How should I know what's in three years? Most of them don't even know where they will be in two or three weeks.
“If 2024 is over for me in Liverpool, then there will be a year's vacation first.”
Perhaps we may be reading into things too much here at EOTK Insider but “if” seems to be a rather important operative word in this instance.
Having joined Liverpool in 2015, some had reasonably assumed that 2024 would be the definitive endpoint of Klopp’s tenure at the Anfield helm.
Indeed, it’s worth noting that, by that point, the former Mainz coach’s time in Merseyside would be the longest he’s spent in any one managerial role.
Having brought back the title and Champions League to Liverpool (and potentially further honours in the next three years), few could begrudge the 54-year-old a year’s holiday to recharge what will presumably be his rather worn-out batteries.
Yet, we can’t help but focus on that one little word; unassuming yet carrying a smidgeon promise.
By 2024, Klopp will have earned his rest. But… what if?
It’s expected that some amount of rebuilding will occur in between now and the end of Jurgen’s contract, which could present him with something of a conundrum.
Once having started the rebuild, how comfortable will he feel handing over the reins to another?
“This squad in the moment is outstanding, we all love it, but we have to stay on track as other teams don’t sleep and we don’t sleep,” the manager spoke of his prior contract extension in 2019.
“We have to see what we change, what we don’t change.
“All of these decisions should be made out of a real comfortable situation.
“When you are in, you should be responsible for all that stuff and I feel responsible for it. When I leave at any point in my life it is important that it is still in a very good place.”
We find it difficult to believe that the Liverpool boss’ desire to leave the club “in a very good place” will deviate much by 2024.
As such, if we find ourselves in the middle of a rebuild, it’s difficult to see the German leaving things to chance.
A lot can change in three years, of course, though it will comfort supporters to know that Klopp himself doesn’t perceive the end of his contract with a sense of finality.
While “if” could mean very little in a few years’ time but for now, it leaves open the possibility of yet another extension.
