Liverpool fans identify Jurgen Klopp's potential successor after six-goal thriller 😮
Fans were keen to share their thoughts on Thomas Frank following the Reds' 3-3 draw
It’s far from being a regular occurrence when Jurgen Klopp comes out after a match, holds up his hands and goes, “look, we didn’t deserve all three points today, credit to the opposition.”
Following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Brentford at the weekend, however, that’s more or less what the German came up with beyond the final whistle.
“They deserved their three goals for the way they played,” the 54-year-old told Sky Sports post-match.
“We couldn’t deal with the long balls for different reasons; we should have scored more goals, we had incredible chances.
“They deserved it, we played offensively and with the ball, I don’t think we could have controlled them much better.
“We couldn’t deal with them defensively.
“These things happen, it was brilliant play, the pass from Robbo to Diogo to Sadio then Mo, it was brilliant football. Mo normally scores in these situations but today not.
“I liked how we played up front together we should have scored more.
“If we won 3-2 or 4-3 we still have struggles defensively, they did really well.”
It has to be said that a few defensive lapses appear to have potentially cost the Reds in their bid to build up a slight points cushion between themselves and their league rivals. That being said, due credit must be handed to Thomas Frank’s men for the crucial part they played in securing a share of the spoils.
Indeed, after going toe-to-toe with the Merseysiders, a number of Liverpool fans took to Twitter to voice one particular opinion about Klopp’s counterpart in the technical area.
There’s no questioning the fact that Frank implemented some commendable tactical play to unsettle our backline, with the Bees’ incisive crossing and offensive overloads playing havoc with our defensive setup.
Whether this is grounds to suggest that the Dane would be a suitable, potential (‘potential’ being the operative word) replacement for Klopp, however, is a conversation perhaps best-suited closer to the time of the 54-year-old’s contract expiration date.
Nonetheless, it can hardly be a bad sign that the Liverpool boss - at the very least partially - sees a reflection of himself in the Brentford coach, comparing his time spent with Mainz to the job Frank is doing with the West London-based outfit.
“The football they play is incredible, the organisation they have is incredible so Thomas is obviously doing a brilliant job, Brentford is doing a brilliant job,” Klopp noted before the two sides’ meeting.
“How they recruit, how different they are, how much they show even with lesser money it’s really possible to create something really special.
“It reminds me a lot on the time at Mainz when I was there because we had no money, we had to be creative in the transfer market.”
With the former Borussia Dortmund coach’s contract not set to expire until 2024, it’s a potential concern that blissfully lies ahead in the distance.
We’ll be sure to keep track of Brentford’s progress under Frank in the meantime, of course, as we imagine Liverpool’s hierarchy will be doing as we crawl closer to the dreaded day of Klopp’s departure.
