Liverpool's latest Ben Davies move suggests club hasn't learnt critical lesson 😬
Liverpool are gambling on avoiding a repeat of last season's horrific set of circumstances
Liverpool are reportedly prepared to allow Ben Davies to depart the club on a loan spell, as noted by Goal journalist Neil Jones.
A number of outfits are said to be keen on attaining the services of the former Preston North End centre-half, including Celtic, who were said to be in the running for the Englishman’s signature before the Reds initially swooped in.
Now, here’s the thing; given that the prior campaign was for all intents and purposes defined by our injury struggles, it seems a bit of a risk, to put it mildly, to allow the defender to leave (albeit temporarily).
The scale of our bad luck when it came to injuries last term was utterly unprecedented, of course.
Realistically speaking (touch wood), we’re unlikely to witness anything like the crisis Jurgen Klopp was forced to steer his ship through on our end anytime soon.
Still, it’s a huge risk to take given that Nathaniel Phillips’ future is yet to be made clear, with a number of sides likewise said to be interested in the 24-year-old.
With Klopp unlikely to stand in the way of the ‘Bolton Baresi’s’ potential departure, we could then be left with only an injury-prone Joel Matip, summer signing Ibrahima Konate and Academy graduate Rhys Williams before having to dip into the youth ranks once more for backup options.
Their recovery being carefully presided over by Dr. Andreas Schlumberger, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez should be at minimal risk of reinjury, which means it’ll be up to the injury gods as to whether the pair will last the majority of the upcoming campaign.
As has been rightly pointed out by fans, however, Davies can always be recalled from a loan spell (subject to the mutual agreement of the clubs involved) if required. But the decision doesn’t seem to indicate that the overarching lesson of the 2020/21 campaign has been learnt.
It’s one we’ll be hoping Liverpool won’t be taught a second time.
