Multiple clubs sound out Liverpool over Naby Keita summer transfer 🔴 ✍🏽
Will LFC cash in on the rarely-fit Guinean...?
When he’s good, he’s very, very good. But he’s often unavailable and is often inconsistent.
And his performance against Real Madrid, that saw him hooked before half-time, was the straw that in the eyes of many Reds, might break the back of his Liverpool tenure.
Barcelona, Atalanta, Borussia Monchengladbach, Inter Milan, Sevilla, RB Leipzig and Leicester City have all now made enquiries as to Keita’s availability in the summer.
That’s a stellar list of clubs, including some of Europe’s very biggest, which suggests Liverpool could recoup a big chunk of, if not all, of the £50m-odd we shelled out on him back in 2017. (He arrived in 2018, a year later.)
I change tact on Keita regularly. I love watching him at his best. He’s skilful, presses and has something a little special in and around the area that our other midfielders do not.
But it’s more of a personality thing. He doesn’t take the game by the scruff of the neck. He’s not a communicator. And if he obeyed Jurgen Klopp’s instructions in the manner Gini Wijnaldum does, he’d play more minutes when available.
The fact he didn’t bother learning English in the year before arriving at Liverpool, when he knew the transfer was sealed, affected his integration and disappointed Klopp.
We are losing Gini on a free though, and I imagine Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is for sale, too. Perhaps one more season for the no.8 would make sense - as we do not want to completely strip the squad of options.
