No issue with Adrian's new deal... providing Kelleher stays as no.2 🧤
We can't rely on Adrian as a no.2 this coming season...
Adrian was given a new contract yesterday, which naturally encouraged idiots online to abuse the Spaniard - whose good start at Liverpool has been clouded by a number of poor performances ever since.
But as a 3rd-choice, he’s fine. He’s just what you need in that role: experienced, liked around the training ground, committed, etc.
This, though, is providing CaoimhÃn Kelleher stays as Alisson’s backup.
Last term, Alisson missed eight games injured. The season previous, this number was 14.
For a goalkeeper, that is very high. They hardly ever get injured, but Alisson has a habit of picking up muscular problems, which means we need a no.2 capable of providing consistently strong backup for his brilliance.
Kelleher is decent. He has potential, but at 22 and approaching 23, he surely needs a loan deal to a club where he can play regularly.
If he’s granted one, we 100% need a new backup stopper. We think the position is worth spending between £5m and £10m on, actually - given the importance of the role and the likelihood of Alisson missing the occasional crucial fixture.
1) Alisson
2) Kelleher or new signing
3) Adrian
