Tottenham reaction
I think there are ways to lose a game, aren’t there? I think the way Liverpool lost that game on Saturday was acceptable, understanding and encouraging. They’ve had an encouraging start to the season full-stop! I don’t think losing that unbeaten start should take away from what’s happened and the club’s development over the course of the last few months.
Considering that the narrative around Liverpool has been ‘they’ve got some serious defensive issues’, I actually thought the way they defended was pretty outstanding for the most part against a good side away from home, with 10 men from the 26th minute and nine men from the 69th minute. To be the way they were and to set up the way they had was a credit to the manager and the players as well. There were a couple of times where they got a corner late in the second-half and you thought ‘they’re not gonna, are they? They’re going to go and score here, aren’t they?’ It was just beyond them. It was a cruel blow!
I thought Joel Matip was the man of the match for Liverpool, along with Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, until the last second of the game. But I don’t think you can put too much blame on him; it’s a cross that’s been fizzed in… I saw a few people saying he needed to sort his feet out and you just think ‘yeah, okay, but the game’s gone to 96 minutes when you’ve been playing a couple of men down, defending your box tirelessly for the most part, clearing balls away and getting in the way and the right positions’.
