Our hearts go out to Luis Diaz
Jurgen Klopp did make the point that it’s very hard to make football big in this kind of situation; it’s very hard to talk about how important three points and the performance on show are. But I think he hit the right note in saying, “What we can do, we will do, we've done already in the club and the only thing we could do today was fight for their brother - and that's what they did.”
It was a very touching moment when Diogo Jota came across (I think it would have been whoever scored the opening goal against Nottingham Forest) and lifted Luis Diaz’s shirt up. I saw plenty of Colombian flags around the ground. There usually are a few around on any given day to be fair, but there appeared to be more around yesterday. And, of course, there was the old Luis Suarez song revived for Diaz ‘I just can’t get enough’.
It feels very insignificant, doesn’t it? But it’s about all you can do in a situation such as this. You can show your support and solidarity. Dominik Szoboszlai himself spoke on the matter and revealed a few of the players didn’t know what had happened until they woke up on Sunday morning, then they had a meeting around it with Jurgen Klopp and it was explained that Diaz had gone back to his family and thus wouldn’t be playing a part in the game. I think in the circumstances, for the players, it was just something they had to deal with. They showed they were with their ‘brother’, as Klopp said - and that’s the way it’s viewed within the team with this close-knit environment - and it manifested itself within the game. It doesn’t change the situation and we’re all still awaiting the best possible news to come from it. All we’ve got to do at the moment is wait and keep our fingers crossed.
