Man City vs Liverpool review
I think it shows Liverpool have still got a way to go but you have to view the draw as progress. I was a little bit surprised by the general chatter around the game from certain quarters, specifically this idea that there was a gulf between the two sides. Don’t get me wrong, I thought City were the better team on the day but you would expect them to be at home and they were often the better team anyway at the Etihad even when Liverpool were at their very best. I certainly don’t think the game should set any alarm bells ringing at Liverpool. I do think, perhaps, from a City perspective there might be an element of frustration, not just at the fact they dropped some points, but because their levels have dropped as well. Liverpool, for their part, might take some frustration from the fixture in that they might feel, if they’d had a bit more quality, they actually could have got more from the game or at least caused City more problems.
I think City were the better team generally, but Liverpool were the more dangerous team when they had the ball and when they were in more dangerous situations in possession - they just didn’t make the most of them! You think of the first-half with Darwin Nunez having a loose touch in the penalty area and the huge save from Ederson for the header. There were chances where you thought maybe Dominik Szoboszlai or Curtis Jones could have pulled the trigger. Second-half, there was a chance where Luis Diaz doesn’t get enough on the ball to help set up a counter-attack. Liverpool had their moments. They didn’t play at their best level and so how you review that result really depends on whether your glass is half-full or half-empty. Do you look at it and say, ‘God, what’s it going to be like when we play at our best level?’ or ‘if only we had!’.
